Reasons for Symbian's failure

1) Fragmentation - Symbian operating system was not a complete product, which was one of the biggest misconceptions about the symbian OS. In very much simplified terms, Symbian OS is an Operating System Kernel and other end user companies had to build UI and SDK on top of it inorder to make use of it. Sony Ericsson and Motorola had their UIQ platform, while Nokia had Series 60 and NTT DoCoMo had MOAP(S). As a result, you could not run apps developed for Series 60 on UIQ and vice versa even though they were both based on the same version of Symbian kernel. Symbian OS was built by a London-based company Symbian Ltd. which started as a partnership between Nokia, Ericsson, Motorola and Psion. Before it was fully acquired by Nokia, Symbian Ltd. was owned by Nokia, Ericsson, Sony Ericsson, Matsushita and Samsung.

2) Lack of focus - as a result of fragmentation of ownership it was hard for Symbian Ltd. to respond to changes in the market as dynamic as smartphones. It was owned by several companies, which resulted in slow decisions and execution. Nobody was betting 100% on Symbian. Even Nokia, the largest shareholder of Symbian Ltd., was experimenting with Linux via their Maemo efforts.

3) Strong competition - Apple and Google were simply stronger competitors and Nokia was not ready to respond. iPhone came out in June 2007 but Nokia consolidated Symbian only 18 months later in December 2008. By that time, even if Nokia would not have made its mistakes, it was too late to re-design Symbian OS.

All of the user-facing issues like clunky UI, AppStore and app development story were simply the result of the fragmentation and lack of focus.

Symbian OS had a solid architecture, great engineering systems and internal development tools. However, everyone - engineers, designers and management were reluctant to embrace change fast enough. Good bye, Symbian!

Switch back to feature phones from Smart phones effectively

How can I switch back to feature phones from smartphones? What are the advantages of feature phones over smartphones? What is it like to downgrade from a smartphone to a feature phone? How to prefer tablets over smartphones?

First of all, let me list the positives of preferring a feature phone over Smartphone :

1) Battery duration: Smartphones are huge battery hogs. Most smartphones don't last for 24 hours without recharging. But most of the feature phone lasts for a week. If you are always on the go and don't always remember to charge, feature phones are the best. Now, you can have a weekly reminder to charge at your own convenience.

2) Reliability: Imagine that you are in an emergency situation, you pulled your smartphone out, only  to find that it had hung and won't reboot in a long time. Seriously, it is stupid to pair  extreme complexities of entertainment+gaming with something that is  essential: phone. Having cut those entertainment attributes, you could shop for a phone & network, purely on one  attribute: reliability of voice communication.
3) Distractions: Smartphones  add an array of distractions to the existing pile of distractions. Walking on the street and you see people like  zombies lost in their own world of games/music/communication apps.

4) Wifi availability: In the past 5 years, Wifi hotspots have become ubiquitous. Thus, I am suggesting a combination of feature phone and a tablet/laptop instead of a smartphone. You can use your iPad to get the job done on most occasions.

5) Screen size: Tablets provide an ideal compromise between phones and laptops. After the arrival of iPad, It isn't satisfactory seeing things on a micro scale.

6) Data costs: You may no longer need to pay $100 for unlimited data + voice. You can effectively save something out of your monthly budget.

7) Get out of rat race: Once you are addicted to the smartphone and built an image that way, you will have to keep up with the latest of the gadgets/apps all the time. It isn't worth the time, especially when you are competing with the common masses.

8) Data loss/privacy: You could lose a phone pretty easy (I have lost it once in an airline security check). Losing a smart phone can be pretty serious (think of all the data that is there, accounts connected and payment services enabled). When you have a feature phone, you don't lose much more than the contact list and a few SMSes.
